It was really a mixed feeling for me when earlier this week, NBC announced that they have signed a four-year deal with Formula One for the exclusive U.S. media rights to the world's most popular global motorsports series. The deal means that NBC will televise all 19-20 races (Note: The Grand Prix of America has been postponed until 2014, so F1 will either replace the race or just have 19 races in 2013) including four on NBC itself and the remaining 15-16 races on NBC Sports Network.
All 19-20 races will be live streamed on NBC Sports Live Extra, the NBC Sports Group’s live-stream platform that is available online at NBCSports.com as well as on mobile and tablet apps. (Read more)
I say mixed feels because I like watching most of the Formula 1 races on SPEED channel as I enjoy the live coverage of the race including listening to the announcers Bob, David, Steve, and Will call the event. There is just some announcers that work well together and cover the event right and these guys do. They know Formula 1.
And unfortunately this looks like another sign that SPEED Channel itself is going away and being replaced with FOX Sports One which appears to be a mix between Baseball, Football, and other sports that FOX covers including NASCAR. But that leaves me wondering where all the other motorsports will go in 2013 like the Grand-Am Series, Motorcross and more.
But on the flip side, times are changing and NBC seems to have an interesting setup. I will be interested to see who the announcers will be, how the coverage will be and what the NBC Sports Live and NBCSports.com streaming coverage especially on a tablet will be like and if its free. So I guess it will be a wait and see for me and of course me enjoying the final races of 2012 before the off season.
